I believe that a strong education system can positively impact every facet of a community and the overall quality of a person’s life. As a child, I was encouraged by my grandfather to use my imagination. He taught me math and science skills and helped me to envision myself as a teacher, a banker or a doctor. He wanted me to know that nothing was impossible. So I believed in myself and went on to earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees. I want the same kind of possibilities for all children. My love for education grew when I worked as a Domestic Violence Educational Program Administrator. I saw first-hand how domestic violence impacts a staggering number of children. I wanted to change that story, so I went to graduate school and studied education administration. Education – not incarceration – is the best answer for bettering society. I knew I couldn’t effectively lead a group of teachers without having walked in their shoes, so I became a teacher and curriculum specialist. During my tenure with a national charter school organization, I grew in responsibility as a Principal, Chief Administrative Officer and Director of Accountability. I collaborated with agencies who led the charter renewal process as well as participated in focus groups for changes to the DC Regulations in education. I saw how combining my education and experience could help me as a community activist. As Director of Education Support for a national franchisor in early childhood education, I worked with an executive team to promote continuous improvement and sustainable growth. In serving as Director of the Office of Accountability, I focused on fiscal responsibility, compliance as well as federal program and charter school oversight. I formerly served as Assistant Superintendent for the Chester Upland School District and currently serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools for the district . And because I believe learning never stops, I continue to utilize my background in business and education to empower communities.
