Burrs have always been a nuisance, but critical precision parts have to be burr free at high magnification to ensure proper functioning. He helped define the needs and restraints for precision products. He’s published 39 books and more than 260 articles on burr technology, manufacturing , local history and family history. He has published more research on burrs than any other person in the world. In recognition of his achievements, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award was named in his honor in 1995. In 2011 he received an honorary Doctorate from Russia's Don State Technical University for his work on burr technology. His Doctor of Engineering degree from Meiji University in Japan was based on burr technology also. He started his career in 1966 as a staff engineer with the Bendix Corporation (later acquired by Honeywell). He retired in 2006 as the Quality Assurance Manager of Honeywell’s Kansas City facility.
