  Lahiru Wijedasa is a Connecting people and the environment through agriculture and conservation. Over 16 years I have worked at increasing scales of biodiversity conservation and management. Starting at individual trees, designing, and building new botanical collections in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, to community/forestry and finally landscape level with regional governments and as an independent consultant to government and companies and NGOs. My experience has molded my belief that sustainability needs a balance between livelihoods, environmental conservation, and private enterprise to drive sustainable development. My thoughts are reflected in this interview in Nature 558, 477 (2018). This led me to set up Conservation Links Pvt Ltd in 2015, under which two former tea estates (14 acres) were bought in Sri Lanka. The farm was converted into an organic farm which worked closely with local farmers and villagers across the Kotmale Valley in Sri Lanka. In addition to agriculture, the farm is also a test bed for efficient, environmentally friendly agriculture methods. In BirdLife, I cover the forest programme across 12 Asian countries and assist in our global carbon portfilio. To this end, I am involved in setting up and running BirdLife's first REDD+ carbon project in Lomphat, Cambodia. The project is over 160,000 hectares and will result in over 11 million tonnes of avoided CO2 emissions, as well as the protection of biodiversity and enhancements of livelihoods to living communities.
