I pursued product development because I wanted to avoid any financial responsibility - math was never my strong suit and I was afraid of failing in a merchandising role. I found myself looking for new opportunities and ended up in a merchandising role that I assumed would be a quick stop on my way back to product development. I fell in love with merchandising - the buying office felt like the hub of the entire organization. I was able to touch every piece of the business - planning, e-commerce, marketing, pricing, product. I focused on building strong cross-functional relationships because I wanted to learn as much as I could about those other pieces of the business - how did they impact me, what were there roadblocks, how could I help clear them? I made a career shift last year to move into marketing for KOHLER, which was a massive move for me - going from department stores to manufacturing was a big enough leap, but I also shifted from years of merchandising to focus on channel marketing. I loved having the opportunity to build relationships with strategic accounts, to learn a new business, and to be a part of a company with 150 years of history. As I look at my next move, I'm open to new opportunities. I would love to stay in marketing, but I have experience that lends itself to digital opportunities, purchasing, and planning!
