Kevin Klingbeil Email & Phone Number | Kevin began his post-college life in 1997 as a writer and geographer (with B.A. degrees in both from the University of Missouri) who decided to go to law school to promote sustainable development and support indigenous and underserved communities throughout the world. Beginning in 2000, Kevin Klingbeil served as a lawyer in a number of practice areas ranging from environmental/water/natural resources/fisheries law to international trade and sustainable development policy. Along the winding path of his legal career, Kevin earned a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law, an LL.M. in international trade and sustainable development from the New York University School of Law, facilitated the inaugural Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the United Nations and participated in the “Earth Summit” in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002, and served as executive director of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice at NYU from 2004-2005. He practiced Indian and public housing law in Denver, Colorado as an associate with Wagenlander & Heisterkamp, LLC from 2006-2009, an experience which shaped the rest of his career as a service provider, advocate and ally for Indian tribes and indigenous communities. In 2009, Kevin moved to the Census Bureau where he took on the role of Regional Manager of Quality Assurance for the 2010 Census, covering 10 western states and 91 Indian reservations from North Dakota to New Mexico and monitoring the data collection activities of over 50,000 field staff. When his term with the Census Bureau drew to a close in early 2011, Kevin created Big Water Consulting in Seattle, Washington, and he has since conducted data collection and analysis projects for tribes, tribal programs, Native organizations, government agencies and nonprofits in more than 16 states with the purpose of promoting tribal data sovereignty, building capacity to actively utilize data for program and resource management and creating opportunities to correct the stories told about tribal communities by external data sources. He regularly presents to local, regional and national audiences and serves as a training and technical assistance provider to tribal and rural communities nationwide on subjects ranging from data collection to federal funding formulas to strategic planning. Kevin owns and currently serves as Managing Director of Big Water Consulting. He is a native of the Seattle area, has also lived in Colorado, Missouri, New York and (briefly) Kenya, and is the proud dad of his fittingly stubborn dog, Edgar.
