While some kids my age were reading comic books, I was reading the DOS manual. Batch files taught me a lot about achieving goals despite the limitations of your environment. Not satisfied with pre-loaded programs, I began coding my own role-playing games in QBasic. Learning a programming language gave me an outlet for my creativity. Most of the early 90's involved BBS systems, wardialers, viruses, modifying software to get around license keys, and that sort of thing. By the end of high school, I had become fairly proficient with MS Access, VBA, and VB6. By the early-2000's, I had started learning to program in .NET. As much as I liked desktop application development, SQL Server is where I really found a lot of enjoyment. Especially the performance optimizations that came along with it. For the next 15 years or so, I wrote code from scratch, expanded on existing applications, discovered ways to break applications to find potential QA/security issues, and generally did it all. Or at least did the things I had wanted to. From there, I stumbled into management. It started as just a way to make the department better and solve some of the pain-points that were hurting us the most. Eventually, though, it became a way to learn new skills and to find ways to solve problems using something more complex than any programming language -- other people. My motivation has largely remained the same, whether I was developing software or managing people. I want to find ways to make each day more enjoyable and entertaining. And I do that through improving myself and creating opportunities to improve the environment around me.
