My research interests are optical switching technologies in photonic networks such as optical label switchings, optical signal processing, next-generation optical access system such optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, and radio-over-fiber (RoF) communication systems. He has published over 311 journal papers, written a book, “Optical Code Division Multiple Access -A Practical Perspective-“(Cambridge University Press 2014) and two book chapters, and translated one book. He holds more than 40 patents. He received the 1980 Young Engineer Award from the Institute of Electronic and Communication Engineers of Japan, the 1985 Paper Award of Optics from the Japan Society of Applied Physics, 2004 Achievement Award of IEICE of Japan, 2007 the Shida Rinzaburoh Award, and Fuji Sankei Business Eye Award in 2009. He received the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Award in 2014. He is the Life Fellow of IEEE and the Fellow of IEICE of Japan.
