My engine is my DNA My locomotive was designed by my parents Telling me I’m special that All roads are open to me But also telling me that It takes hard work to get Wherever I want to go So I keep the fire stoked But also watch with delight The journey, the passing landscape My first car was youth It was modest, built with second hand parts But it was always full of friends and family A safe car but interesting and inquisitive My second car was college where I learned my limitations and my strengths And the style of this car led to a number of other cars …ROTC led to the military car, which took my train To Europe and Asia although somehow skirting War …My minor in Psychology led to the grad school car …My theatre training led to the teaching car From car to car I went, adding, enjoying The grad school car led to studying in Hawaii Which led to Substance Abuse Counseling and Prevention Which led to Marriage, which led to Parenthood, Which led to teaching Family Counseling All cars, all moving forward To a North Shore home of nearly forty years. Still the engine keeps going, the train keeps growing I’m working on a Writing Car with compartments For Poetry, Short Stories, Novels, Textbooks It’s a fun car with funny seats and windows And it helps me see different things in different ways I still steer the engine lest I get off track. I still stoke the fires, coasting is not good for my train. I still watch the passing landscape with glee. And I still spend time in all the cars Remembering and talking with friends Some of who have been on board a long time.
