Critical resilience and decision-making are reliant on the edge that alternative and divergent perspectives can provide. This edge is not about hardware and systems, but about inspiring and stimulating people to think divergently and differently about risk, even existential risk. You could call me a devil’s advocate, a provocateur. I don't promise answers, but I will stimulate questions–perhaps questions previously not asked. You can then try to answer them! NETWORK-CENTRIC WORLD In an age of accelerating technological developments, where operational speeds are also accelerating, we teeter at new frontiers of tech and warfare. This frontier is dominated by reliance on signals carried at light-speed, or near light-speed, by frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum. Access, for example, to uncontested and uncongested frequencies is essential for civilian and military connectivity, interconnectivity, and therefore, interoperability of systems and hardware. Frequencies are also the signalic conduits for new modes of warfare that draw civilians and civilian infrastructure into the contemporary 'theatre of war' eg: cyber and information warfare. HAM RADIO TO PHD I grew up on the land in western Queensland, Australia. While my parents were grain-growers, my father’s passion for ham-amateur radio has influenced my life-long interest in technology. My mother’s passion for the arts and humanities has influenced my life as a visual artist, curator, and researcher. In 2015 I began a Master of Philosophy [MPhil] research degree in cultural studies and art history. I combined arts research with examinations of contemporary technology and war. During this degree I started paying attention to airborne militarised drones, persistent surveillance, and increasingly autonomous systems. I completed my MPhil in 2017. In 2020 I started a creative practice-led PhD at Curtin University, WA-completed Oct-2023. My research focused on increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum. FATHER’S LESSON An important lesson I learnt from my father was that speculation about technology is ok, but it must be informed.
