Research topics included the supervisory role of the UNHCR, a cross-comparative analysis of supervisory mechanisms amongst international human rights frameworks, ‘boat people’ and interdiction at sea, protracted refugee situations and environmental refugees.The program involved living and volunteering in host communities, with a special focus on inter-cultural dialogue and gender and development issues. I participated in several grass-roots community volunteer projects in Canada and Mozambique, including working on environmental sustainability projects with First Nations communities in the Cowichan Valley, B.C., and then volunteering at an orphanage and UNHCR refugee camp in Mozambique.Involved in the “Culture and Development” project, aiming to facilitate intergenerational transmission of culturally relevant practices and knowledge among refugees in the camp, and to support intercultural dialogue and cultural exchanges between refugees and the host community. I worked specifically with refugee children on the development of culturally relevant literature, and was involved in the publication of a culture dictionary showcasing diverse cultural backgrounds to be used by refugees in the camp.Assisted in all aspects of running the organization, including fundraising, volunteer coordination, board of director relations and meeting reports, communications, event organization, administrative assistance, research activities, policy recommendations, corporate relations, public outreach, and assistance with the school-based program and education initiatives. Travelled to Johannesburg, South Africa, as a lone student participant for the purpose of researching the situation of HIV/AIDS with a group of education professionals. Subsequently, I encouraged peers throughout the school board to engage in fundraising activities, contributing to over a million dollars being raised across all York Region schools.
