Many years ago while in college and teaching RPG courses I took a part-time data entry position with a small manufacturing company to assist with their ERP implementation. The users were not tech savvy, had no IT department to speak of and were manually entering bills of material from handwritten cards. Each number was laboriously recalculated then keyed into the new system. While I could have cashed in on the incredible number of hours it would have taken to key hundreds of sock recipes, that’s not my nature. Instead I created an Excel spreadsheet with all of the necessary calculations in a layout that matched the input screen of the new system. I then entered the base numbers and printed them for the user to be able to quickly and easily perform the data entry. Granted, today I would have just created an upload but that detracts from the point of the story which is the fact that my goal is to make my customer’s jobs easier. These days I develop complex Win Forms and web applications using C#, VB, RPG, SQL, SSIS, and SSRS to deliver business critical information. One of my recent projects has been to work with Store Operations to build a web based system which stores critical store and product information, tracks production and waste, schedules ongoing product offerings, and builds daily requirements schedules based on sales forecasts and orders. The project has led to decreased waste due to more efficient production schedules. Whether it is a data entry clerk or the CEO my customer’s needs are my priority. My core strengths are excellent problem solving skills, interpersonal communication, adherence to best practices and company policies and procedures, cross-platform communication, data manipulation and migration, documentation, as well as the ability and desire to learn new concepts, languages and platforms.
