Topics I taught ranged from coastal soil, to fishes, to fossils, to the impact of humans on river systems.I worked alongside NOAA research scientists to record video surveillance and chevron trap data of the populations of commercially managed fisheries species in the Gulf of Mexico. I also provided GIS technical support and created a shapefile database of survey sites from side-scan sonar data that will be used by the team in future survey seasons, and provided a protocol for the creation of shapefiles from the side-scan sonar data. Other jobs included working the deck of the R/V Harold B, and I was charged with running the deck for the last survey trips at the end of the summer. I assisted in processing the catch from the chevron traps which included counting and measuring fish specimens on deck in sometimes unfavorable conditions, and I also processed the specimens in the lab which included the extraction of otoliths, gonads, and livers from multiple fisheries species.I worked with the Georgia DNR gathering data on sea turtle activity on the Georgia coast during the nesting season by monitoring more than 17 kilometers of beach daily for sea turtle activity. The sea turtle interns relocated and protected sea turtle nests that had been laid in areas in which the embryos would not survive until the emergence of the nest. We also protected any developed juvenile sea turtles from predation by ghost crabs, raccoons, wild pigs, and sea gulls. After emergence of the juvenile sea turtles, we processed nests for hatch rate success data. We finally documented any adult sea turtles encountered at any time and checked for visible tags and physical injury.I worked with coastal geology and geography professors to digitize shorelines from aerial imagery in ArcGIS in order to analyze shoreline change using the R statistical package AMBUR for use in coastal research and management. I also assisted with remote sensing data collection using terrestrial LiDAR and RTK GPS systems.I assisted a professor in collecting cave obligate invertebrate specimens from two caves in southern middle Tennessee for cave biology surveys. Wet pitfall traps and aquatic traps once a month in both of the caves, recovered the traps after 48 hours, and cataloged the species and abundances of the organisms captured. As a research assistant, I followed appropriate decontamination procedure according to state and federal protocol to keep contamination between the caves low. I also assisted in analyzing data for a resulting publication (Wakefield and Zigler 2012).
