I remember that in 2005 the median life expectancy was 35, now with modulators and other effective therapies some people with CF can live full lives. As a community we've come a long way, and I never imagined that we'd accomplish this much by the time I was a young professional, but our work is far from done and many scientific challenges lay ahead of us to CURE cystic fibrosis for EVERY person living with the disease. Being personally connected to this disease from a young age has motivated throughout my life to learn as much as I possibly can about CF. From my elementary school science fair project on CF, to my senior project in high school, to learning about the CFTR gene in my college courses, and now working at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's own research lab outside of Boston. At the lab I am part of the gene editing team. Among other things our team is tasked with using the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing platform to generate rare cystic fibrosis variants to be used as tools for the CF research community. These models can be used in a variety of ways including drug discovery and development. Historically, in the development path, drug candidates are tested on primary cells originating from CF patients. However, for rare mutations, patient material is not always available, thus the ability to test the effectiveness of both approved drugs and developmental candidates is restricted. Our platform enables the generation of new cell lines, which allow studying essentially any genetic variant of CFTR in its native genomic context. As of 2019 we began exploring gene editing strategies that can correct multiple CF-causing mutations as more than 2,000 genetic variants have been suggested to cause CF. Insertion of a super exon (partial cDNA) into the native CFTR genomic locus can restore all mutations downstream of the insertion site while maintaining the endogenous CFTR promoter. Generating cell lines and analyzing the downstream effects of novel gene editing techniques such as this and other therapeutic approaches (exon skipping etc) is currently the primary focus of our work. I excel in organized work environments where I'm encouraged to learn, understand, and innovate with purpose. Research science is a team sport and being part of a dedicated team makes all the difference. In my spare time I like to snowboard, backpack, and run. I enjoy spending time outdoors and seeking the next adventure.
