Kate Baxter is recognised for her role in establishing Muzika, a charity which has helped to transform the lives of severely deprived and traumatised adults and children in orphanages and home hospitals in Romania by enabling their social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical development through music. The concept of Muzika came about when Kate watched a programme about the plight of Romanian children on breakfast TV in February 1990. From there, the Muzika Charitable Trust grew into a network of volunteers and partners that has delivered arts-based therapies to children and adults in Romanian care institutions for more than 25 years. During Kate’s career as a freelance consultant in music education the following publications built Kate’s name as a creator of innovative music: Fundamental Activities, Pompaleerie Jig, Jazzylophone, Kit Bags, Play the Chromaharp and Take-a-Note. Kate’s role in leading the creation of Muzikit also builds on her long-standing interest in and experience of supporting people with special needs. This spans her role as a freelance consultant in special education, ten years teaching children with cerebral palsy, her role as a social worker and adoptions officer, her work on special programmes for disabled people, her role with Scope UK and her work for the Tibble Trust on music for the elderly. Kate’s focus is always on drawing out the individual’s experience of music to help empower them. She has presented workshops on Music in Early Childhood and Special Needs in Canada (ISME), Hong Kong, Salzburg, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.
