In each role I had the pleasure of influencing the collaboration between people in such a manner that we accomplish more. In my current CTO role, I have even more possibilities to shape the conditions under which people can thrive within the team. There is no more valuable asset than the people in a company: the employees are the company. As a CTO I value the input of every team member. That is why I engage my teams in our technical endeavors and make sure that everybody understands why the goals I set are important. Of course, this means that hiring the right people is an important part of my job. And once hired, empowering them to reach their potential is at least as important. Furthermore, I setup the right amount of structure for the teams to be able to engage optimally. And always making sure that the teams understand why the structures are in place. My experience as a system engineer helps me to communicate the ‘why’ of the structures, as I know what the team members need to be able to embrace and work towards achieving those goals. At the end of the day it all comes down to believing in the mission of the company and being passionate about technology that almost always plays a crucial role in fulfilling that mission. My competences are in translating the mission into tactical (SMART) goals, measuring and communicating with all relevant stakeholders (management, product team, support team, etc). And of course achieving the goals! Although most of my current time is spent on steering the teams towards achieving our company goals, I still am engaged as a software designer/engineer. Some of the activities are: coding a proof of concept based upon a new technology (version), do code reviews, brainstorming about scalable solutions, etc. I am convinced that a good (IT) leader needs to stay close to the kitchen to experience the heat. This helps me in making better decisions for the teams and aligning with all stakeholders on the ‘why’ of those decisions. If there is anything I can highlight from my career in various roles, it would be that we need to understand before we can be understood. Some methodologies and technologies I use: Scrum, Agile, SecDevOps, Azure, Azure DevOps, .NET Framework, .NET Core, SOLID, Design Patterns, DDD, JavaScript, MVC, C#, ASP.NET, (T)-SQL, ASP.NET Web API, Entity Framework 6/Core, LINQ, Angular, React.
