I wanted to curate a museum or work as an archivist, and I had decided that making art was just going to be a hobby. One day, during an American History class, I had an epiphany. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life talking about the great things other people had created, I wanted to actually create things myself. I felt the heavens open up above me and heard the choir and everything. I changed my major to Graphic Design that afternoon. As a graphic designer, I think good design doesn’t really call attention to itself. I like trying to boil down the main idea of the project into easily recognizable symbols and imagery, use a limited color palette, and bold fonts that speak for themselves. I always want everything I make to feel clean. We’re always surrounded by design, literally. We see images and type everywhere we go. I became a graphic designer because I would like to be surrounded by good design. Even things that we look at once and then throw away – there’s no reason they can’t be treated a little bit more like art. I believe everything has the potential to be visually beautiful and interesting to look at.
