Kaity Brown Email & Phone Number | Working as Publishing Editor for The Reflector in the last year of my journalism degree was not only an an incredible learning experience in terms of writing, editing, and leadership but it was also something that I was very proud of every day that I worked there. I started at The Reflector as a Staff Writer, writing the occasional story and learning from the editors at the time. The next year I was asked to run for News Editor, which I did and which I also loved, as the current events and fast-paced news scene is my main interest, until the year after that I had the chance to be Publishing Editor. With this position I managed 7 Editors of The Reflector: News, Sports, Arts, Features, Online, Layout, and Photo, coordinated meetings, assigned roles and responsibilities and edited all content for the bi-weekly student publication. I was passionate about creating opportunities for students to engage with the publication and mentoring beginner writers and helped editors improve their writing and editing skills. I also had the incredible experience of completing a week-long series of courses through the Associated Collegiate Press journalism conference in Philadelphia in October.I started at Stantec as a Marketing Intern, specifically in a reporting and photography role, taking staff photos for proposals, photographing trade shows and events, writing articles for the Internal websites. This was a fast pace reporting job, offering me new creative project every day. I worked as an Intern for one summer full-time and prior to that I was part time as I was working on my journalism degree. I learned a lot through this position, honing my photography and writing skills. This job gave me the opportunity to dive into the industry of communications and marketing.I worked at both of these publications through a school internship course requiring 450 hours of working at a news publication. I was a daily reporter for both publications, working on several news stories at a time. I wrote and published stories and photography for The Daily Bulletin in Kimberley, B.C. and The Daily Townsman in Cranbrook, B.C alternating between both towns. The issues I would cover varied greatly including Arts, City Council, Sports, local events as well as some creative photography projects. I also participated in newspaper layouts and photography editing. While a lot of the articles were assigned, I effectively covered those assignments while creating own project and ideas for both publications.The Centre 64 is a local art gallery which houses local art exhibits, drama productions, home-grown music concerts and more vibrant arts events for Kimberley. I worked as the Cultural Programming Assistant for two summers, from June to September in 2011 and again in 2012 and in this role I coordinated the Creative Kids program, arts and crafts programming for kids of various ages and assisted art instructors, organized the kids fair at the Arts on the Edge with booths, games and vendors, assisted with campaigns put on by the Centre 64. In this role I also worked on promoting the various initiatives for the arts center by writing press releases and created coverage published photographs and press releases in the local newspaper, The Daily Bulletin.As an Online News Editor, I collaborated with two other news editors on the print team and the online team to cover community current events of Calgary. I wrote in-depth news stories, managed contributors, who were second and third year students in the program, and their stories through layout and extensive editing. I published stories and photographs online and managed online content layout online for The Calgary Journal, award-winning journalism student-run monthly paper at Mount Royal University.After being a steady Staff Writer for the News Section the academic year prior, my editor encouraged me to run for News Editor of The Reflector. Through this role I managed contributors and their stories through layout and extensive editing, wrote and published stories and photographs for The Reflector, a student-run bi-weekly paper at Mount Royal University, focusing on issues affecting the University and student life. I also had the opportunity of completing a week-long series of courses through the Associated Collegiate Press journalism conference in New Orleans in October.As a Communications Specialist for Stantec, I get the opportunity to highlight some of the amazing work the company is doing and profile the amazing people within the company. Anything from Community Development, to Environmental Services, to Oil & Gas and more, I write stories, capture photos, create engaging videos and write for Stantec's own magazine spark Magazine.
