I'm fortunate that in my professional life, I can put this planet and its inhabitants at the center of my work. I have the daily opportunity to listen to, learn from, and connect climate adaptation practitioners and communities throughout California and beyond. I am currently Director of Science Policy and Engagement at Pathways Climate Institute, a small and mighty climate adaptation firm based in the SF Bay Area. Prior to joining Pathways, I served in the CA Governor's Office of Planning and Research as the Climate Services Lead for the Integrated Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Program. Through that work, I had the chance to learn from local and regional governments, NGOs, community-based organizations and others, to connect these organizations to climate science, state agencies and policies, and to help build responsive state-level actions. I’ve also spent time in federal service as an Oceanographer at the USGS’s Pacific and Coastal Marine Science Center and served as the Director of Outreach for the Climate Impacts and Coastal Processes Team. There, I led outreach and stakeholder engagement, working to connect climate science with coastal stakeholders. I worked with most coastal communities throughout California in helping translate science so that it is more readily incorporated into their local planning and decision-making processes. My work broadened to also include working with engineers, architects, and infrastructure planners to help them move towards incorporating forward-looking climate information in their design, planning, and implementation. I was a contributing author to both the California Fourth Climate Assessment as well as the Coastal Effects chapter of the National Climate Assessment. During my 17 years at USC, both as a graduate student in Ocean Sciences and then as an Assistant Professor in the Marine Environmental Biology program and the Marine and Climate Science Specialist at USC Sea Grant, my work focused on translating and connecting complex marine and coastal scientific information to diverse audiences. I love the ocean. I love people. And I love the coast where these two intersect. I am so fortunate to work in a field at which I can spend my days trying to find the balance between society and nature, to help us prepare for our shared future.
