Dr. Barr has 25 years of experience in critical care leadership, innovation, quality improvement, education and research. She is passionate about improving the lives of critically ill patients. Dr. Barr is the lead author of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's (SCCM) 2013 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Pain, Agitation, and Delirium in Adults Patients in the Intensive Care Unit. She is currently a member of the SCCM’s ICU Liberation Committee, and a Faculty Member of the ICU Liberation Campaign ABCDEF Bundle Collaborative. She co-founded the first intensivist-led ICU Team at VAPAHCS in 1993, and created the first VA ICU Nurse Practitioner Program there in 2011. She has served as the Medical Director of the VAPAHCS Respiratory Therapy Department for over 20 years. Dr. Barr co-founded the Stanford Critical Care Medical Student Core Clerkship, the first of its kind nationally, and served as the Clerkship Director for over a decade. She has previously served on the Stanford Faculty Senate, Medical School Admissions Committee, and Human Subjects Committee. At a national level, Dr. Barr chaired the SCCM’s Ethics Committee and Patient and Family Support Committee, and she co-authored the SCCM’s 2007 Patient and Family Support Clinical Practice Guidelines. Dr. Barr has participated in several national quality improvement collaboratives to improve ICU patient care, including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) 100k Lives Campaign and the IHI 5 Million Lives Campaigns, and more recently, the ICU Liberation Campaign ABCDEF Bundle Collaborative. Dr. Barr’s research interests include the mathematical modeling of the clinical pharmacology of sedatives and opioids used in ICU patients, and ICU outcomes research. Dr. Barr has published over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.
