Over the past decade I’ve played a leadership role in helping forge a global climate and health movement which is successfully shifting the trajectory of health care around the world toward zero-emissions, while mobilizing health professionals to advocate for a just transition from fossil fuels. I’m proud of my contributions at Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), including producing a groundbreaking study on health care’s global climate footprint; developing a road map to decarbonize the sector; and then working closely with WHO and the UK COP Presidency in 2021 to secure commitments from then 52 and now more than 80 governments for sustainable, low-carbon, climate resilient health care. Recently I advised the Asian Development Bank as it collaborated with India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 to develop a position adopted by G20 health ministers and heads of state on climate and health. At HCWH, I’ve also led the establishment of a series of other initiatives, including Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network (members now in 86 countries), and a successful worldwide campaign, in collaboration with WHO, to eliminate mercury in healthcare. I’ve helped raise tens of millions of dollars for all these efforts. In addition, I’ve advised a philanthropic foundation on several million dollars in small grants to key organizations working on environmental health in the Global South. My commitment to this work emerged when I co-founded the Environmental Project on Central America (EPOCA) in the mid-1980s. EPOCA did pioneering work on the connections between ecology, peace and justice in Central America, supporting emerging environmental movements on the ground and mobilizing U.S. environmentalists to work for peace in the region. I went on to coordinate Greenpeace International’s work at the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in and then wrote a book, “The Corporate Planet” that delved into “Ecology and Politics in the Age of Globalization.” From there I founded CorpWatch, a web-based campaigning organization that focused on globalization, corporate accountability, human rights and the environment. I‘ve also recently spent several years on the board of Save the Waves, a worldwide coalition of surfers and communities working to protect local ecosystems from destructive development—a pursuit that combines two of my life’s passions, surf and environment.
