  John Landers is a The colourful life of Briton John Nicholas Landers’ fifty years in Brazil, a bachelor until 68 years old. He became an agronomist and capped this with a diploma in Agricultural Engineering and a Masters Degree in Irrigation Science. In Brazil, he took his first job as a researcher with the American IRI Research Institute which greatly contributed to the massive development of modern agriculture in the formerly barren central savannahs of Brazil (the “cerrado” region) and in the Amazon. He also became a soybean farmer in Goiás state, in 1977, and went on to found the Associação de Plantio Direto no Cerrado, leading the dissemination of Zero Tillage sustainable farming in the tropics worldwide. For his efforts in promoting Zero Tillage sustainable farming, starting in 1976, he received many awards: the Heidelberg International Award for Environmental Excellence (2005); an OBE and the state of Goiás’ Order of Anhanguera (2006); the Emil Mak award for International Agriculture from the University of California Alumni Association (Davis Campus) (2009); and an Honoris Causa Doctor’s degree from the State University of Goiás (2017). His travels have taken him all over Brazil and the world, consulting on agricultural development projects, and at quiet times, he writes poems and short stories. At sixty eight, he entered into his first marriage, to a beautiful Brazilian girl and, at 79, due to the loving care of his wife, he is still going strong.
