John Blanton is a Dr. Blanton was educated in the public school system of the Commonwealth of Virginia, culminating with B.S., M.S., and Ph. D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He was employed with the General Electric Company from 1979 until 2016, including stints at the Global Research Center and at GE Gas Turbine in Schenectady NY, at GE Aviation in Cincinnati OH, and at GE Power in Greenville SC. He has 40+ years design, management, and consulting experience in gas turbine technologies for power generation and aerospace propulsion. He is a subject matter expert in gas turbine heat transfer and secondary air systems design and analysis. He is recognized as an international expert in the performance analysis of labyrinth seals, and developed the GE analysis code used for this purpose. Dr. Blanton is an active member and passionate supporter of ASME and AIAA. He has served on and/or led several ASME/IGTI technical committees including Heat Transfer, Education, and Aircraft Engine. In 2002 he was elected a Fellow of ASME and in 2012 received the ASME Dedicated Service Award. Dr. Blanton has served AIAA at the Institute level on several committees including five years on the Board of Directors, and has received three Special Service Citations and the Sustained Service Award. In 1993 he was elected an AIAA Associate Fellow, in 2008 he was awarded the AIAA Distinguished Service Award, and in 2013 he was elected an AIAA Fellow. In 2019 Dr. Blanton was inducted into the Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Society of Distinguished Alumni. Dr. Blanton has also been very active in engineering education. He has been an Instructor or Adjunct Professor at Virginia Tech, Union College, and the University of Cincinnati. He is now a Teaching Associate with Practical Aeronautics, Inc. Specialties: All aspects of gas turbine technology with particular emphasis on heat transfer and secondary air systems analysis.
