  John Altrip is a By training, I'm a chartered physicist whose original academic research career focussed on the development of electronic materials, devices and displays for mobile technology applications. During my physics career, I've worked in UK and European research laboratories, technology start-ups and multinational corporations. Since retraining as a medic (Nottingham 2009), I've combined emergency medicine (Pilgrim Hospital, Boston) with a special interest in respiratory medicine as an Honorary Clinical Fellow in the Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. Combining my passions for physics and medicine, I co-founded Cambridge Respiratory Innovations Limited (now TidalSense) in 2013, serving as Medical Director until 2021. Since 2016, I have held an NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur Fellowship to support the further development and adoption of the TidalSense novel technology within the NHS and beyond. TidalSense (www.tidalsense.com) have taken a unique, high speed, high resolution carbon dioxide sensor, and developed a portable, patient friendly point-of-care lung function measurement technique based on breath by breath analysis of normal tidal breathing. Exploratory clinical studies to date, on adults and children with acute and chronic respiratory conditions, have shown that the waveforms collected by this device are accurate and reproducible, facilitating self monitoring of lung function. Mathematical analysis of these waveforms is generating personalised, disease-specific metrics, and providing patients and clinicians with real-time evidence-based data for respiratory disease management. The opportunity now exists to deploy this technology in connected digital health solutions for diagnosis, monitoring, treatment optimisation and disease prediction applications in a wide range of respiratory health applications.
