  Johanna Neufuss is a Johanna Neufuss was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. In her most recent project, she worked with stakeholders, great ape welfare experts, and policymakers to improve welfare assessment techniques for captive great apes. Over the last 8 years, she has studied the functional anatomy, locomotion, and cognition of great apes extensively and has worked in the wild, zoos, and sanctuaries. In her last project, she and her colleagues developed an Enclosure Design Tool to encourage species-typical behaviour in sanctuary chimpanzees, to ensure healthy, wild-type captive populations. Giving her experiences in translating research knowledge into practical solutions to improve captive great ape care, she worked in partnership with BIAZA and the Great Ape Welfare Group (UK). In this joint initiative, she provided an up-to-date assessment of great ape facilities and husbandry in the UK/Ireland and a systematic review of welfare literature to generate evidence-based practice guidelines and improved welfare outcomes for captive great apes. Currently, Johanna works as the new Welfare Standards Research Officer at Blue Cross for Pets, UK. In this role, Johanna is using her experience of applied research to lead and support the research activity within Blue Cross and with external partners, enabling the charity to make evidence-based decisions and recommendations regarding the charity's services, public affairs, and social impact work. Her research helps to inform and advise the rehoming welfare standards for a variety of species and inform best practice within rehoming, behaviour, and clinical settings.
