After publishing my first book back in 1996 — a paperback on occultism — I decided to translate it myself into English. In 1999, I was bold enough to send the text to my favorite publishing house on all things occult, Samuel Weiser, and, to my surprise, they loved it and decided to sign it. My publishing house in Brazil, Nova Era (part of Grupo Editorial Record), was exultant and asked me if I would like to work for them as a translator, and that was the beginning of my career as an English<>Brazilian Portuguese translator. I have translated books for the following publishing houses so far: Best-Seller, Fundamento, Novo Século, Nova Era, Harlequin, Verus, Suma de Letras, and Underworld. I am the official Portuguese translator of PLANETROMEO, a gay social network. I also study Spanish and Dutch. In my documents, my name is Alexandre Gomes Soares — Johann Heyss is a pen name. I happen to use my pen name when translating fiction and literature in general so readers can connect the author to the translator. EXPERIENCE AS A WRITER As an author, I have published 4 books on the occult, a biography, 3 books of poems, and 3 novels. Besides English, I have books published in French, German, Czech, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. EXPERIENCE AS A JOURNALIST I have worked as a journalist for magazines like ffw mag and newspapers as O Globo, International Magazine and others, always writing about arts or interviewing artists. EXPERIENCE AS A LANGUAGES TUTOR/TEACHER I started working as a teacher in 2000 for Wizard downtown Rio and soon got upgraded into Coordinator. After three years, I quit the job in good terms to spend a semester in New York. I went back to Brazil in 2005 and started tutoring individual students rather than groups in schools, giving classes at their homes or offices. In 2015 I started tutoring online.
