Over his tenure, Joe has guided EPN’s strategy in innovative and agile ways. He expanded EPN from an annual conference-focused organization to a network model serving a much broader community of Episcopal parishes and cathedrals. Under Joe’s leadership EPN has expanded its work beyond the annual conference and now offers ongoing learning for lay and clergy leaders through digital workshops. These workshops have attracted over 40,000 attendees to over 200 workshops since their launch in March 2020. Additionally, EPN convenes thought leaders and organizations to discuss and strategize the future of parish and cathedral property (buildings and real property). Under Joe's leadership, EPN is expanding its work of strengthening lay leadership in the Episcopal Church. Through a multi-year grant, EPN is developing a curriculum to prepare lay leaders for their role in leading local ministry in collaboration with clergy members. Today, EPN is recognized across the Episcopal Church as the essential community of parish and cathedral leaders committed to ensuring the unique witness of the Episcopal Church continues for generations. Prior to joining EPN, Joe served for almost a decade as a director of development for several faith-based and legal services nonprofits in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, California. He started his career as a corporate attorney in San Francisco and spent ten years at legal information services provider LexisNexis as Sr. Director of Emerging Technologies. Joe graduated with a degree in history and religion, magna cum laude, from Tufts University and holds his law degree from Stanford Law School. He is a member of the State Bar of California. Over his career, Joe has been active in numerous civic and professional organizations. Joe currently serves on the governing boards of The Rensselaerville Institute, Bexley Seabury Seminary Federation, and the Anglican Theological Review. He served on Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s Development Advisory Committee. Joe has served on the vestries of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Previously, he served in leadership positions for legal and public service organizations focused on funding HIV/AIDS direct service organizations and LGBT+ bar associations. Joe is a member of the Cherokee Nation and has served his tribe in a variety of roles. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his husband Tarak Patel and their lab Lila.
