It’s difficult to explain the fire and passion that I have inside me when it comes to taking care of my patients. Emergency Medicine is my forte - whether that be in a Hospital setting, providing Pre-hospital care at outdoor events or in an ambulance. I have now worked within a Nursing setting for 10 years. I have worked in a number of Emergency Departments as well as a Medical Decisions Unit as a Sister, and the occasional medical ward. Whilst working in my permanent post, I also undertook agency shifts. I came to a decision when I was a Sister to leave and become a permanent agency nurse to enable me to develop my knowledge further. I came to the conclusion as an agency nurse that there was a huge difference in skills amongst us. Also, when booked for shifts agency nurses who were booked in the Emergency Department for example, didn’t have the necessary skills eg. cannulation, venepuncture. Now whilst it’s recognised that nurse staffing levels need to be met, not having the necessary skills can sometimes have a detrimental effect on the other staff. So, I thought to myself, having experienced things from the side of a manager and as an agency nurse, I could use the skills and experience I have gained to perhaps help correct that. Not only will this have a positive impact for the NHS, they will also have correctly skilled nurse and Healthcare assistants, but it will help increase confidence in the agency workers by empowering them with development and skills.
