I am currently working through a transitional period to bridge my biological science background with more technical and applicable skills. My undergraduate career began with a large focus in life science and academia, and it ended with a victory lap with courses solely focused on computer science, math, and statistics. Where did this drastic shift come from? During my lab work for my fourth year genetics thesis, it became evident to me that I lacked the technical skills and programming know-how to effectively analyze large sets of genetic data on a high-throughput basis. This limiting factor put an artificial ceiling on the scope of my research, and it sparked a flame in me to learn and improve on these technical skills that I lacked. Taking an extra year to focus on these technical skills opened my eyes to the potential of data analytics, and it also opened new doors for me in terms of career paths. During that final year, I decided that I hadn't had enough and decided to dive deep into the field by applying to my current program. I am currently looking for a data or software position to fill. I am hoping to find a position that will utilize my skills and teach me things I can't learn in a classroom setting.
