  Jesse Hsu is a I am passionate about building strong, collaborative communities and am most interested in materials/chemical industry positions where I will have the opportunity to create innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. My PhD research focuses on leveraging unique reactivity in polymer synthesis to access advanced materials with desired structures, properties, and functions. I currently collaborate with the multi-institutional Center for Alkaline-Based Energy Solutions (CABES) to design, synthesize, and characterize polymer membranes for next-generation fuel cell technologies (alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers). Recently, I led a team of researchers from four different research groups in developing the first direct coordination-insertion polymerization of ionic monomers that achieves high ion incorporations, resulting in a lead-author publication, provisional patent, and central contributions toward 12.6 million in DOE grant funding to CABES. Importantly, we carried these materials from their design and synthesis to their characterization and implementation into a working fuel cell device. In addition, I have gained knowledge of current industry trends while developing novel methods to synthesize degradable plastics and target existing materials for degradation and/or chemical upcycling, resulting in three peer-reviewed publications. This work requires in-depth knowledge of synthetic mechanisms and reaction kinetics as well as chemical, thermomechanical, and electrochemical characterization techniques.
