Jeroen Zoeteman Email & Phone Number | The initiative of the Psychiatric Ambulance aka 'Psycholance' in Amsterdam We started the initiative for the Psychiatric Ambulance in 2012 in collaboration with Ambulance Amsterdam, the Municipal Health Centre and the Police. Psychiatric patients sometimes present themselves in the public domain, with public nuissance, strange behaviour and aggression. As in many countries, patients in acute mental distress and who are causing alleged danger are often engaged by police and transported by them to hospitals or Emergency Rooms. Police are not trained in dealing with these patients and they tend to use more force and coersion then strictly necessary. On the other hand standard ambulance personal are not familiar with psychiatric patients. Many ambulance nurses demand that all patients are sedated during transport. This difficult situation made us think that the principle of the PER (training, dedicated staff and experience) should also be applied to the transportation of psychiatric patients. Although acute mentally ill patients need a particular approach as they sometimes have behavioral disturbances and a lack of insight in their illness, we want to approach a patient as much as possible as a person who needs help. The ‘Psycholance’ cannot be distinguished from a normal ambulance. The psychiatric trained staff is dressed in regular ambulance outfits. On the inside the ambulance is stripped from all not necessary equipment to create a minimum of distraction and minimize the possibility of harm. Police should only be called in case of a criminal offense or when the dangerous behaviour cannot be handled by the specially trained health care staff. We consider the Psycholance as a solution in mental health care for teh transportation of mentally ill patients, who have obvious symptoms of psychiatric illness, out of lack of insight don’t seek help and might cause a danger to themselves or others.
