Jennifer Shaw Email & Phone Number | I have a PhD in anthropology from Simon Fraser University with child/youth-focused, arts-based, ethnographic, and feminist participatory action research experience. My studies have culminated into conference presentations, publications, community reports, guest lectures, and a Photovoice book. Current research interests include children and youth, transnational migration, family and care, labour and precarity, ethnographic and visual research, and critical social theory. My modes of expression are both textual and beyond text as I love experimenting with senses and form. My writing has been featured in Children & Society, Anthropology of Work Review, and Global Studies of Childhood, and I have a forthcoming book with UBC Press. Prior to entering academia, I gained 10 years of experience working with migrant youth, supporting young people to pursue their education and career goals, and offering facilitation skills to youth and youth workers. My successes in creating spaces for young people to thrive were recognized by United Way of Greater Victoria (Youth Worker Award, 2012), Volunteer Victoria (Excellence in Supporting Youth Volunteers, 2011), and the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre (Outstanding Contribution, 2010). I have incredible attention to detail, love long-term vision, and have a huge capacity to engage in iterative processes for growth as well as finish what I start. Programs I've developed range from creative art-based activities exploring identity and belonging to hands-on education and employment skills. I have extensive training from Partners for Youth Empowerment, Equitas, Power of Hope, Possibilities, and more.
