For more than 10 years, I worked as a reporter at newspapers in Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Missouri, New Mexico and Utah. I won several national and state news awards for my efforts in elevating issues affecting immigrants and marginalized communities. I earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Utah. As a National Hispana Leadership Institute Advancing Latina Leaders in Nonprofits (ALL IN) fellow, I earned a Public & Nonprofit Leadership Certificate from Georgetown University. I also got a bachelor’s degree in news and public affairs from the University of Texas at Austin. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, I am a fifth-generation Chicana with New Mexican and Mexican roots. I’m the eldest of six kids and the first in my family to graduate from college.
