I have had the opportunity to work with many gifted students and reveal to them that they are intelligent people who just happen to learn differently. Being an educational diagnostician is all about analyzing data to solve problems. Gathering parent, teacher, and student information and marrying it with test data, scores, and observations is like putting a puzzle together. In this case, the problem to be solved is why a student is not experiencing success in the classroom. Once the testing is complete, I work collaboratively with the parents and school to create a plan for that student’s success. When writing psychoeducational reports and communicating the results, I keep the audience who will be reading the report top of mind. I have tested a wide range of ages, from kindergarten students who were struggling to read and write to adults who needed accommodations in graduate school. Clear communication, both written and verbal, is extremely important in ensuring parents and schools have the information they need in a form that is easily understood. My background in education is diverse, spanning all grade and socioeconomic levels, both in public and private schools. What I have learned is that all students need people who care and are invested in their success. Students need a team behind them to thrive, a team that works collaboratively to champion them, and to problem-solve when there are inevitable bumps in the road. Parents, teachers, school staff, and the student all have an investment in providing the environment for that student to thrive and meet their full potential.
