Had I emerged from an electrical engineering background, I like to think that I would have ended up in the same place, on the other side of the fence. Those people are, coincidentally, my favorite kind with which to share architectural debates. GPU computing was the cool new thing during my academic years. I missed the evolution of parallel computing in the '70s, and to a lesser degree the superscalar architecture in the '90s. I relished the opportunity to explore a new architecture while others were just beginning to do so. My earliest dabbling in (mis)use of graphics APIs to trick the GPU into doing some non-graphical math delighted me. When CUDA emerged during the first year of my PhD, I was hooked. This architecture was set to revolutionize the industry. Nearly ten years later, I find myself in the semiconductor industry having an absurd amount of fun. I don't think I quite comprehended how deep and complex the design space for these magnificent devices could be. Architecting software to hide all these parameters is no mean feat. It is an ever evolving source of challenges, decisions and the odd (ahem) quirky hack.
