As the sole business person at Aerion’s founding, I managed our team of outside accountants and lawyers. I performed our planning, budgeting, payroll, invoice approval, and reporting to the CEO/COO and Board. Prior to Aerion I was a cost account manager for earned value management at McDonnell Douglas. On the engineering side, I was project manager for our wind tunnel and flight test campaigns. In these, we successfully validated Aerion’s supersonic laminar flow technology. I performed mission simulation to support sales, and I maintained our master aircraft production and financial model. During this time I learned “design of experiments” statistical techniques. I strongly believe that modeling and analysis techniques in both engineering and business need to better reflect the variability of the real world. As Aerion grew and brought in international partners, I became the Export Control Officer and implemented Aerion’s first export compliance policy and technology control plan. I also trained our staff in their compliance responsibilities and performed classification of our technology. While I was Chair of the world’s only supersonic industry advocacy group, we successfully passed supersonic-related legislation through Congress, and coordinated the industry response to FAA-proposed sonic boom rules. At ICAO, our presentations and advocacy pushed the Organization into serious study of modern standards for supersonic airplanes.
