Jamie Finamore Email & Phone Number | I learned about Human Factors Engineering/HCI accidentally. I was a US Navy wife with a toddler at home and a husband out to sea for months at a time. I was bored and in desperate need of adult conversation, so I enrolled in psychology classes at Old Dominion University with the plan of becoming a child psychologist. I had already earned a BA in English from Seton Hall University but my goal was to be accepted directly into ODU’s Psychology Master’s program. To increase my chances, I began volunteering in Dr. Mark Scerbo’s psychophysiology lab in ODU’s Psychology Department. Dr. Scerbo encouraged me to apply to the PhD program and study Human Factors under him. During my time as a doctoral student, I was awarded 2 (the max allowed) consecutive 1-year research fellowships at NASA Langley Research Center during which I studied Augmented Reality (AR): I studied the effects on team performance when a human is paired with a biocybernetic system vs. another human teammate. The biocybernetic system would “pick up the slack” when its human teammate was no longer attentive as indicated by their brain wave activity. I moved on to an internship at IBM which eventually transitioned to a full-time position as a User Experience Analyst, and the rest is history. In my spare time, I love to read and collect animals. I have 2 cats, Luci and Peppa, and a foster-fail dog, Zoey. I hate to cook – I’ve been known to skip a meal rather than chop a vegetable. Thankfully my daughter, Jess, survived this and is now living safely on her own. The pandemic has brought back my love for singing and dancing. My animals have endured many spontaneous outbursts. Unfortunately, all this practice only reinforced the fact that I lack the talent for either. But I still sing and dance like no one’s watching. Sorry, Zoey.
