I am Head of Music Technology at Greenhead College in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, which has a national reputation for academic excellence. Greenhead was recently featured in the Sunday Times as the highest ranked state-funded sixth form college in the North. After decades of outstanding reports, in 2022, Greenhead again received an outstanding OFSTED report. The college’s ‘Carol for Yorkshire’ project was nominated for a Creative Learning Guild award and for the Huddersfield Examiner Community Awards as Community Project of the Year. Music Technology results are consistently in the top 10% of centres nationwide, and in 2022-23, music technology students achieved 100% high grades. I support colleagues delivering Music and Music Technology, delivering CPD and advising on planning, resourcing, standardisation, teaching and learning and assessment. I have supported teachers, heads of department and senior leaders. I have completed my NPQSL for Senior Leadership. I am an Ofqual External Expert for Music and Music Technology, and was a member of the judging panel for the Music Teacher Awards at the Rhinegold Music & Drama Education Expo in 2018/2019. I have been a governor for two high performing institutions in recent years, in Manchester and Huddersfield. I completed research on stretch and challenge in post-16 education, along with perceptions of music theory in A Level Music and Music Technology students with a view to improving transition from school to college; this formed the basis of my MA dissertation. I worked as Head of Visual and Creative Arts faculty with responsibility for a large team delivering courses in Art, Dance, Drama, Music and Music Technology at Rochdale Sixth Form College. The college was rated ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED in 2013, and students’ progress in music technology was described as exceptional. I have written books for A Level Music, Music Technology and GCSE Music for Rhinegold Education and CGP Guides. I deliver nationwide training to teachers on Music Technology and Popular Music, alongside commitments as a team leader, examiner and moderator on A Level, BTEC and GCSE courses. I perform as a pianist and saxophonist across the North of England and am a co-founder of ‘Flat Cap Brass’. I also compose; I recently created a soundtrack for pioneering project ‘A Dark Tour of the Universe’, which premiered at the British Science Festival in September 2019. I write music as ‘RVEL’ on online streaming platforms.
