James Galloway Email & Phone Number | My best memory is when my father gave me my first computer at age 11. It was literally in a box in pieces. He said it was mine if I could get it to work. I was instantly drawn to the challenge. As I began to assemble it, I remembered the advice of my grandfather, an uneducated migrant worker, and of my father a Marine-trained electronics technician; ‘Don’t rush and be observant.’ Of course as a teenage boy I didn't listen and quickly fitted the pieces together somehow into a working system. From this point I was hooked on why it worked. What had the people who built this done to get the electricity out of the wall and turn it into something I could interface with? What did each piece that I had put into the system do and could I make it better? I'm a recent graduate of St. Mary's University with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. I have been asked by pretty much everyone who has known me why I didn’t obtain my undergraduate in an engineering field. The answer to this is that one of my greatest passions is space. It is through the lens of physics and math that space is understood. It is my belief that the best way for me to serve the space science community was to first achieve a better understanding of what data is needed to move our scientific knowledge forward. My undergraduate education has also helped me learn what methods are used to analyze the data and to use this to design and build scientific instruments which would be better suited to collect this data. I hope to continue my education with a Masters in Electrical Engineering in the Fall 2017.
