He was thrilled that the Big Data age offered opportunities to apply data science and machine learning beyond research labs to real-life social systems, but dismayed that almost everyone he knew in the role of a "data scientist" was working to help people click ads. This frustration led him to co-found DataKind, a global network of data scientists and AI engineers that worked alongside nonprofits and governments to co-create technology innovations for social impact. In his 8 years as DataKind's CEO, Jake grew the company from 2 people to 40, raised 30M, and expanded to global chapters. More importantly, he oversaw 350+ volunteer projects that brought real impact to nonprofits, from preventing home fire deaths with predictive algorithms to managing southern California's water needs in realtime. After leaving DataKind, Jake turned to the field-level challenges of applying data science and AI to social impact at scale. While a research fellow with data.org, he developed a taxonomy for classifying "Data for Good" and "AI for Good" groups to better characterize the space. With the Ford Foundation, he built a guidebook for supporting foundations in funding data and AI projects. He is currently consulting with major foundations and nonprofits on strategies for tackling sector-level social challenges with the latest AI tools. Prior to DataKind, Jake was the data scientist in the New York Times R&D lab and worked building machine learning solutions across organizations like NASA, DARPA, Google, and Bell Labs. He is a frequent public speaker about AI and society and his work has appeared in the Guardian, Harvard Business Review, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review. He hosted The Numbers Game on National Geographic and was a 2011 PopTech Social Innovation Fellow and a 2012 National Geographic Emerging Explorer. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Statistics from UCLA.
