  Jake Mitchell is a I am the engineering manager of testing and development at Utilimaster and manage an incredible and diverse group of engineers and technicians. Together, we develop great products that serve the utility, parcel and emergency vehicle industries. I have almost twenty years in the automotive industry, having also worked for a tier 1 manufacturer and an HVAC systems manufacturer, both of which provided me with a number of engineering tools to ensure I can lead my engineering team adequately. I am well-versed in Solidworks (with several certifications) as well as various finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics software (primarily Solidworks and Ansys). Most importantly, I not only know how to use the software but have a deep understanding of how they work, the assumptions that have to be made and the equations used. This is important in understanding the results that come out of the software, and whether they can be trusted. I have experience designing with steel (both heavy-gauge and light-gage) and aluminum, extrusions, castings, stampings and sheet metal. I also have experience designing with plastics (vacuum-formed and injection-molded) and electrical systems (primarily 12 volt). My years of experience has given me a strong understanding of designing for manufacturability and the need for validating these designs. I work closely with our vendors throughout the life of a project and ensure that we are designing properly for the needs of our system while remaining within the constraints of our budget. I have experience with various ERP systems as well as automotive APQP processes. I believe strongly in process control and documentation. I have created a number of engineering standards and currently head a committee that reviews outdated standards and updates them as needed. In addition to CAD and analysis tools, I have a strong understanding of other engineering tools such as DFMEA and PFMEA processes and tolerance stack analysis. I find failure mode analysis enjoyable as well as necessary - arguably one of the most important tools in an engineer's toolbox. Outside of work, my passions include music (both of my children are in multiple band programs), automobiles (I currently have seven!) and literature (I love to read!).
