As a lead User researcher for over 4 years at the Cognitive and Immersive Systems Lab (CISL) I was responsible for designing, conducting, publishing, and presenting multiple user studies on the lab’s latest technologies and their developments. I have extensive experience in evaluating educational technologies, conversational agents, and automated machine learning (AutoML) applications using a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods including interviews, usability tests, and effectiveness evaluations. My research helped evolve a foreign language learning game from a one scene, one dialogue prototype to a full game that was successfully utilized in a 6-week language course at the university, AI-Assisted Immersive Chinese. I have collaborated closely with IBM Research on some of their latest technologies for data scientists, including almost a year spent evaluating trust and understanding in IBM’s AutoAI. This study manipulated the AutoAI UI by adding new features to assess how an understanding-of and trust-in technology are related. My Graduate research focuses on ethical design insights and guidelines for humorous features in AI technologies. Recently I have helped to organize an online workshop on theory of mind and mental models in human-AI interaction.
