Jaime MartinezGarcia Email & Phone Number | My research aims to understand how plants respond to vegetation proximity. As a model system I employ Arabidopsis thaliana, which avoids plant shade by activating a variety of responses collectively known as the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS). A robust SAS response allows plants to successfully compete with its nearby vegetation for limited light and other resources In natural settings. However, SAS activation in crops is disadvantageous because it results in an investment in vegetative growth as the expense of reproductive development, increases the risk of lodging and reduces weed suppression. Indeed, suppression of SAS has been indirectly under a strong selective pressure by crop breeder who strive for increasing yields at increasing planting densities. By using the model system A. thaliana, we have contributed to identifying several SAS regulatory components and helped to understand better how these components are organized in complex transcriptional regulatory networks. Recently, we have expanded our research to other plant species closely related to Arabidopsis that tolerate (instead of avoiding) plant shade. This is the case of Cardamine hirsuta, a species susceptible to be used in both reverse and forward genetics because it can be genetically transformed. This new path has allowed us to perform comparative genetic analyses between both species.
