At that time, I already had more than a decade working behind-the-scenes at higher institutions of learning like John Jay College-City University of New York and at Columbia University in the City of New York. At first, I worked mostly in classrooms of students with various degrees of disabilities, and I enjoyed the work. I decided to pursue the possibility of becoming a teacher, and over the next six or seven years, I attended a graduate program while working full time, and earned my teaching license in 2013. My chief intention as a teacher is to help students become successful in school, increase self-esteem and empathy for others. I see teaching as a vehicle for contributing to the common good of society as a whole. For many of my students, education is their only "out," and part of my job is to help them see beyond their own self-perceived limitations. I am a persistent teacher who sets high goals for my students, and I see one of my primary roles as helping students unlearn the learned helplessness attitude that seems prevalent among many of them.
