I originally came to UNT to study economics because I had an innate understanding of how the economy works. However, during the middle of my college career, I had to take a nonvoluntary year and a half off, where I worked and saved money to continue my education. During this gap, I learned a lot about myself and asked people who inspired me how they got to where they are today. Through this, I decided to switch my degree to accounting. Changing my degree to accounting has been a fantastic adventure for me. I have started to enjoy my schoolwork, and because of this, I have been engaged with my education and learning. I’ve learned to be familiar with excel, I’ve developed both verbal and written communication skills, and the list goes on. I’ve learned that communication is essential alongside an accounting degree because I understand that you must be able to tell the story behind the numbers. I was always very polite and shy as a kid, but as I’ve grown up, I’ve gained the understanding that talking to people and communicating is the most beneficial thing you can do for yourself. For the last 3 years, I have worked at a restaurant that cares very deeply about the customer experience. Through this journey, I have learned that the key to making your experience better is by making the guests’ experience better. Serving has taught me a lot about being my own boss with tables and being a leader amongst my coworkers. It has also taught me these communication skills that I did not have before. Bartending has taught me the importance of being a team player and how to multitask efficiently. I am looking for experience in the accounting world and am willing to take whatever opportunity I can get. I am eager to learn and work with and for people that reciprocate respect. As a first-generation college student, I love hearing different peoples’ personal experiences because it helps me paint a picture for my own future. I plan to become a CPA one day, so I want an experience that will help teach me the skills I need to reach my goals.
