His lab functions as a nationwide referral center for muscle disease in Japan and provides pathologic and genetic analyses for diagnosis. As a result, his lab has collect more than 24000 frozen muscles, which is one of the largest collections of this kind. Based upon the successful generation of model mouse for GNE myopathy (also called DMRV or HIBM) and the subsequent development of therapy in his lab (Nat Med 2009), currently, being involved in 2 lines of clinical trials which are being conducted in Japan and in US and Israel, respectively. Also involved in establishing patient registry for neuromscular disorders including Duchenne muscular dystrophy and GNE myopathy. Member of executive boards for a number of academic societies in the field, including World Muscle Society. President of Asian Oceanian Myology Center. Domestically, heading the muscular dystrophy consortium (筋ジストロフィー研究班・班長) and a Executive Board Member/Diretor of Japan Muscle Society, Japanese Society of Neurology, Japanese Society of Neuropathology, and Japanese Society of Neurotherapeutics. Also involved in several committees for JSN. Scientific Advisor for Patient's Association for Distal Myopathies (PADM). Associate Editor of international journals in the field, including Neuromuscular Disorders. Editorial Board member for a number of academic journals, including Journal of the Neurological Sciences and Therapeutic Advances in Neurological Disorders. Certified neurologist and teaching neurologist (JSN) and certified internist (Japanese Society of Internal Medicine). Fellow of American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and American Neurological Association (FANA) (both corresponding).
