Ian Schenkel Email & Phone Number | How did I get from growing up on a farm in New Zealand, spending the early part of my career farming, selling industrial clothing and beer (still the best job in the world - selling beer to Kiwis!) - to a 25 year and growing tenure in CyberSecurity? Well after starting or fixing 11 multi-million dollar EMEA & APAC operations for US cybersecurity vendors, and running 3 of my own companies the answer is simple; I have learned the most through a lot of failures, rejection and a the grit it takes to keep going and striving for the ultimate goal of success! I consider myself to be lucky to find two things in the world I am very passionate about - CyberSecurity and Sailing (racing to be fair)! Even after doing both for 25 years they still ignite that child like curiosity and learning I had growing up on that farm in NZ. My poor parents, I am sure they tuned out of the constant "why" questions but it set me on a path to always question the status quo, why cant you be faster?, more resilient? and more protected against the new threats the digital world presents us? I have learned a lot along the way, had some great mentors in sailing, business, management and just life in general! Anyone can mentor you if you are open to it, in my world there is no such thing as a wasted conversation, you never know what that conversation will lead to, or what you will think about afterwards - those thoughts will likely take you onto bigger and better things! When I used to go on holiday as a kid, the first thing I did was open all the cupboards in the caravan, see what was in them and where everything was. I have not lost that trait and that has lead me to the incredible career I have in cybersecurity and will continue to drive me - don't be scared to look in the cupboards to see whats there, ultimately that is what CyberSecurity is all about!
