From 1995 to 2017, I worked at Aston University, where I spent my last year as the acting Executive Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science (having been Deputy Dean for Research, Enterprise and International from September 2015 to July 2016). I am a Professor of Computer Science and was formerly Head of the Department of Computer Science and Director of the System Analytics Research Institute. At the start of my career, I worked at the research lab of the software company Logica for five years developing data analysis tools and applying formal methods to compilers. I then joined Aston as part of the Neural Computing Research Group. I led the introduction of a range of innovations at Aston: a university-wide research publication repository; work-based Degree Apprenticeships recruiting more than 100 students per year; and a student-led software company to provide on-campus experience of industrial-standard software development. My research spans both the theory and applications of pattern recognition techniques. Much of my work is inspired by industrial problems in bioinformatics, biosignal processing, condition monitoring, remote sensing and financial forecasting. I have put my experience of software engineering to good use through developing the Netlab toolbox for machine learning algorithms, which has been downloaded more than 45,000 times. The book 'Netlab: Algorithms for Pattern Recognition' provides the technical background needed to make best use of the software. I have also released DVMS (Data Visualisation and Modelling System) - a tool to provide state-of-the-art data visualisation algorithms in an interactive framework. In 2016 I was made 50th Anniversary Chair of System Analytics in recognition of my 'outstanding scholarship and commitment to the university.'
