In his current role as Assistant Secretary of DFAT's Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology Branch, he is responsible for driving international engagement to advance and protect Australia's interests in cyberspace and critical technology. Previously, as DFAT Director of Human Rights and Indigenous Issues (2018-2020), he led a team managing Australia's membership of the Human Rights Council and Australia's engagement on human rights and indigenous issues in other multilateral fora and in Australia's bilateral relationships. From 2015-18 he managed international security, humanitarian and legal issues at the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. He oversaw advancement of Australia's strategic interests in the multilateral system on emerging technologies, humanitarian mine action and conventional weapons, counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism. In addition, he led advocacy and advice work on international legal issues. He served previously as Executive Officer to the Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, working closely with senior staff across the Department, in other government departments and in Ministerial offices. He is trusted for his team and resource management skills, strategic thinking, rigorous analysis, sound judgement, calmness under pressure, discretion, and careful handling of the sensitive processes of high office. He spent five years covering political and strategic issues at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and speaks Japanese. Prior to joining the public service he worked as a litigation and intellectual property lawyer.
