I recently left my position as Vice President & Senior Associate General Counsel at Global Payments Inc., a Fortune 500 company and a member of the S&P 500 with approximately 25,000 employees worldwide. Global Payments is a leading payments technology company with worldwide reach throughout North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. I managed the legal affairs for the company's Asia-Pacific businesses in 13 countries and also managed the legal affairs for the company's businesses in Europe in addition to Asia-Pacific for a period of time. Here is a copy of my departure email: "After 8 years at GP serving the Asia-Pacific Realm (and Europe during some of the years), I am now off to a new challenge - I will be the "Mommysaurus" to my two little dinos. Though the job description is not as multi-jurisdictional and does not involve the Card Schemes or various legal systems, it certainly will be multi-disciplinary, as it encompasses the skills of a maid, chauffeur, cook, chief entertainment officer, chief disciplinary officer, teacher, judge, dictator and more..." So why is my headline "Captain in Training" then? That's because being a mom is not my complete identity; I am also picking up new hobbies and plan to revisit some old ones. Right now, I am learning to drive a boat and wake surf so I'm hoping to be addressed as Captain Red one day. (Why Captain Red? My name "Hong" means red.) I took some flying lessons many years ago, so if that's one of the old hobbies that I decide to pick up again, the title would be fitting. I also took piano, Spanish, Italian, and French while I was working at Smith, Gambrell & Russell. (You might ask how I was able to do that while billing hours? Well, when you have a passion, you will find a way and I always had a passion for learning.) Not sure which one I will pick up at this point, but I am sure I will have no trouble filling up the limited free time I have each day. So is this a sabbatical, early retirement or permanent departure from my legal career? I don't have a definitive answer at this time. Some part of me feels guilty. After all, I am a damn good lawyer. Many called me the "Superstar" when I was working at SGR. All the business folks I worked with at GP loved and trusted me and they were very sad to see me leave. Am I wasting my talent? Would I go back to legal practice? One day perhaps. But for now, I am loving every day of my new life and the new challenges!
