During my BSc placement year I completed 2 x 3 month placements, the first in Cornwall with Polzeath Marine Conservation Group and the second in Japan with Shimoda Marine Research Centre. On my second placement, I gathered data for my dissertation project on the physiological responses of Septifer bilocularis to ocean acidification using the naturally occurring CO2 seep off Shikine island, this research was taken on and furthered, leading to publication. My MSc thesis investigated the effect of increasing shore height on intertidal species physiological outputs, specifically Patella vulgata. I explored the possible effects of future climate change scenarios and how this would alter the tidal heights and movement of the Patella sp. on the shore and any possible implication this would have on their physiology. I’m very comfortable with responsibility and love to get involved, therefore whilst at university I had attained a few roles; Course Representative, Deputy School rep of the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, PALS leader, and the treasurer of two different societies – Marine Biology Society and the Welsh society. As a keen marine biologist, I’m also a very passionate scuba diver, completing my recreational PADI qualifications up to Rescue Diver, completed the HSE Professional Commercial Scuba diver course and I had a wonderful opportunity to do a month’s work experience with a scuba diving company in Costa Rica in 2014. I have previously volunteered as a Lab Assistant at the Marine Biological Association, identifying the inhabitants of Sargassum muticum each week for 6 months. Along with my academic life I enjoy an array of extra-curricular activities; from 13 years old I trained to become a national synchronized swimmer and achieved that title by 15 and became international with Junior GB by 17, I then retired at 18 after performing at the European Championships in London. With my synchronized swimming background, I became a coach, judge, and scorer, and when possible, I work at my old club coaching and at national competitions judging or scoring. I am currently searching for marine biology jobs and opportunities.
